How Did Deep Roots Get Started?

I started Deep Roots in 2007, and I have been making soap for 9 years.

It all started when the combined forces of my love of all-natural products and my mother’s extremely sensitive skin first turned me on to ‘real’ soap.

Growing up I remember that my mom loved Camay soap, but every time she would use it she would break out in a rash. Why in the world did that happen?

Admittedly, she did have VERY sensitive skin. The salt in ocean water would also give her a rash if it sat on her skin long enough.

She could never use perfume, and if others wore it around her she would have an allergic reaction.

If she wore any jewelry that wasn’t pure gold, pure silver, or stainless steel she would also break out. I remember a story she would tell me about how she gave in and wore a pair of trendy, dangly earrings to a school dance when she was growing up.

By the time she got home, she had red marks on her cheeks where the earrings had brushed her face as she had danced.

Luckily, I did not inherit her sensitive skin, but seeing what she could and couldn’t use started the wheels turning in my mind – why did some soap and cosmetics give her a rash, and she could use others with no ill-effects? What is going on here?

With that simple question, the seeds of Deep Roots were planted!

I researched the difference between ‘real’ soap and the common cleansing bars that you could often find in grocery stores and I was SHOCKED at what I found out!

What Is The Difference Between ‘Real’ Soap and Cleansing Bars Found In The Grocery Store?

The first astonishing difference I found out about was that the stuff found in the grocery store usually isn’t soap at all! That is why you often see wording on wrappers like ‘beauty bar’ or ‘cleansing bar’.

But if it isn’t soap, what IS it?

Most of what you find on grocery store shelves are really detergents. Detergents are made from synthetic ingredients, and heavily cleans ALL surfaces. This might be great when you are scrubbing the bathroom tile, but not when you are washing your face!

Most detergents clean by stripping away the top layer – whether that is dirt, oil, natural moisture, or even skin (typically in sensitive areas such as your face).

But sometimes through pure luck when what you find in the grocery store really is soap, even then you have to keep an eye out!

The major difference between ‘real’ soap and commercial bars is the glycerin content. Glycerin is a natural by-product of the soapmaking process, and commercial manufacturers remove it because it is a valuable commodity that can be sold as a lucrative by-product.

‘Real’ soap still has the natural glycerin that the soapmaking process creates. You see, glycerin is a "humectant" which is a substances that attracts moisture, so soap with glycerin moisturizes your skin.

Once you switch from the drying, synthetic detergents to real soap made in small batches from premium ingredients you’ll never go back! I certainly couldn’t.

I started making soap for my immediate family (and especially for my mom, with her sensitive skin). Pretty soon, if they started running low on real soap they’d come to me and request more because they just couldn’t go back to the other stuff anymore.

Real soap makes your skin feel so different then the regular stuff. It’s hard to explain for somebody who has never had the experience – your skin feels soft, supple, and refreshed – not squeaky, rubbery clean and dry.
